About ‘The Rats Castle’

In 1865, James Smith purchased the site of the Rats Castle from Dr Sells. Having built the public house and two cottages adjoining, sold them in 1869 to Joseph Williams.

Williams let the Rats Castle to Messrs. Taunton of the Cannon Brewery, Guildford, which passed under the control of the Friary Brewery in 1874.

The origin of the original inn sign remains a mystery. Although, there was a building shown as the Rats Castle, opposite the present Sanford Arms in Epsom Road. This can be seen on a map of proposed Borough boundaries.

It is unknown when exactly it was re-named The Albany. The Albany was a gastropub, appealing to a predominantly younger crowd. They introduced a pull-down screen for showing major sporting events.

After 16 years as The Albany, the pub has reverted to its former name, The Rats Castle in September 2022.

Following a refurbishment and rebranding, the new Rats Castle pub is your local sports bar. Showing a variety of televised sports, across 8 screens around the pub. Two pool tables, a games machine and jukebox. Plus, serving a wide selection of premium beers, pizza and other hot food.

The Rats Castle is the closest pub to G Live theatre. A 2 minute walk away from G Live makes us the perfect place for your pre/post show drinks and food. Check out G Live’s upcoming shows G Live Theatre.

Plus, a bonus with pizza + beer takeaways and deliveries.
